Peter Cavanagh

Peter Cavanagh is a Pacific Northwest wildlife photographer and author who has been taking photographs since he was five years old, growing up in England. He specializes in photographing birds in flight.

His books, 100 Flying Birds: Photographing the Mechanics of Flight and How Birds Fly: The Science and Art of Avian Flight, are published by Firefly Books. After a distinguished career in academia—including nearly 20 years conducting contract research for NASA on human spaceflight and professorships in biomechanics at Penn State, the Cleveland Clinic, and the University of Washington—Peter devoted himself full-time to bird photography and writing about avian flight.

He has traveled to all seven continents to photograph birds, and his images have been included in the Audubon Society’s Top 100 Bird Photographs of the Year. Peter is a member of the North American Nature Photographers Association and guest curated the exhibit How Birds Fly at Seattle’s Museum of Flight. He lives in Washington’s San Juan Islands.
