How do you capture the moment an eagle takes flight, a flock of snow geese fills the sky, or a short-eared owl sweeps low across a winter field? Great wildlife photography takes more than quick reflexes—it begins with understanding your subject and learning to anticipate what might happen next.

Join award-winning wildlife photographer Peter Cavanagh for a day photographing the remarkable winter birdlife of the Skagit Valley, home to some of the finest seasonal birding in the Pacific Northwest. Peter specializes in photographing birds in flight, and his work has taken him to all seven continents. His photographs have been recognized by the National Audubon Society, and he is the author of 100 Flying Birds and How Birds Fly.

We’ll begin with a virtual session on Thursday evening to introduce techniques, discuss equipment, and make sure everyone is prepared for our day in the field. Participants who can’t attend live may watch the session on their own time.
On Saturday morning, we’ll gather at the Breazeale Interpretive Center in Bow before heading into the Skagit Valley. Under Peter’s guidance, you’ll learn how to scout a location, prepare for a shoot, read and anticipate bird behavior, and use your camera to capture both birds in flight and quieter moments in the landscape. Throughout the day, we’ll visit three different locations in search of photographic opportunities. Depending on conditions and a little luck, we may encounter snow geese, swans, eagles, short-eared owls, seabirds, and other winter visitors.

This class is designed to be welcoming to photographers of all skill levels. Come ready for a full winter day outside, plenty of practice, and the unpredictable fun of wildlife photography.
Registration includes the virtual pre-course session, transportation between field sites, and warm beverages and cookies throughout the day. Participants provide their own photography equipment; a recommended gear list will be emailed after registration. Please come prepared for winter weather and field conditions.
