Paint and sketch the bright, fleeting colors of spring in the North Cascades. We’ll study the intense greens of new leaves on vine maples and alders, set against the lingering snowfields of Pyramid Peak and Colonial Peak. Weather permitting, much of the class will take place outdoors en plein air, with plans for a short field trip to the Diablo Lake Overlook.

Artist and longtime Institute instructor Molly Hashimoto will guide participants through techniques for capturing springtime light, color, and form using watercolor and other water-based media. Instruction will be adaptable for a range of experience levels, offering foundational guidance for beginners alongside deeper exploration and refinement for more experienced artists. Participants are welcome to bring their own reference photos or work from images provided by Molly.

We’ll paint both individual plant species and broader mountain landscapes splashed with spring wildflowers. Molly’s recent book, Wildflowers of the West: An Artist’s Guide, will provide inspiration and examples throughout the course.
Based on the shores of Diablo Lake at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, this course includes lodging and three meals at the Environmental Learning Center. Participants may also choose to stay an additional night as part of a Base Camp experience.

Scholarships and Student, Military and Disability discounts are available for most in-person programs. Call (360) 854-2599 for more info!
