Our snake friends often get a bad rap, but they become fascinating—even personable—once you learn about their unique role in our local ecosystems.
These cold-blooded creatures rely on hiding spaces to escape extreme temperatures and sunny spots to bask and warm their bodies. The Methow Valley, with its diverse habitats, is the perfect classroom to observe them in their natural environment.
Join field biologists John and Scott for an up-close look at Eastern Washington’s reptiles and amphibians in the enchanting Methow Valley. Situated on the sunny side of the North Cascades, we’ll spend the day exploring sunny meadows and dramatic canyons in search of these remarkable creatures while delving into the ecology of local species.
Together, we’ll survey for snakes in drier habitats, including areas near active den sites, increasing our chances of encountering a variety of species. Our observations will contribute to a long-term monitoring data set. We may also use a dichotomous key to identify the species we find, adding a hands-on element to the experience.
Deepen your connection to the animal kingdom during this small-group field excursion led by two of Washington’s foremost field biologists.
