Our snake friends often get a bad rap, but once you learn about their unique roles in the ecosystem, they become fascinating—and even personable.

As cold-blooded animals, snakes and other reptiles rely on a delicate balance of habitat features: places to hide from both heat and cold, alongside sunny spots where they can bask to warm their bodies. The Methow Valley offers an exceptional outdoor classroom for observing these adaptations in action.

Join field biologists John Rohrer and Scott Fitkin for an intimate, hands-on exploration of Eastern Washington’s reptiles and amphibians in the magical Methow Valley. Located on the sunny side of the North Cascades, our day in the field will take us through sunny meadows and dramatic canyons as we search for these remarkable creatures and learn about the ecology of local species.

Together, we’ll survey for snakes in drier habitats, including areas near active den sites—helping to increase the likelihood of encountering a variety of species. Our team will record observations for a long-term monitoring dataset, and we may even practice using a dichotomous key to identify the species we find.

Expand your connection to the animal kingdom in this small-group field excursion led by two of Washington’s leading field biologists.

This small-group field experience is ideal for:

  • Curious adults and older teens interested in reptiles and wildlife ecology
  • Nature enthusiasts looking to deepen their understanding of Eastern Washington ecosystems
  • Educators, students, and community scientists interested in field monitoring and species identification
  • Anyone eager to replace fear or uncertainty about snakes with knowledge, respect, and appreciation

No prior experience is required—just a willingness to walk uneven terrain, spend time outdoors, and learn alongside field biologists.

Scholarships and Student, Military and Disability discounts are available for most in-person programs. Minors must be accompanied by an adult. Call (360) 854-2599 for more info!
