Join naturalist and botanist Jazmen Yoder of Northwest Natura for a hands-on, indoor/outdoor workshop exploring the art and science of natural dyeing. This immersive day blends foraging, botany, and craft as we learn how to create vibrant dyes using plants, fungi, and lichens found locally in the Chuckanut Mountains.

We’ll begin the day outdoors, practicing careful observation and ethical foraging while identifying dye plants in the field. Participants will learn how to recognize, harvest, and work with two or more locally found species, gaining insight into the seasonal availability, chemistry, and traditional uses of natural dyes. Along the way, we’ll discuss ecological relationships, sustainable harvesting practices, and how color in nature is shaped by place.
After foraging, we’ll return to the Chuckanut Center to process our collected materials and begin dyeing wool. Participants will work through the full dyeing process and leave with 6–8 dyed wool pieces, ranging in hues such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, and purple, depending on seasonal materials and conditions. We’ll also create a small herb sachet using pieces of dyed fabric—connecting craft, scent, and memory to the landscape.

This workshop is well suited for curious beginners and experienced makers alike, as well as aspiring naturalists interested in deepening their plant knowledge through hands-on practice. Participants will leave with tangible creations, practical skills, and a richer understanding of how color, ecology, and craft intersect in the natural world.
