What does it take to create a trail that stretches 1,200 miles across some of the wildest landscapes in the American West? And how do you turn an ambitious vision into a lasting public resource that connects people, communities, and protected landscapes for generations to come?

Stretching from the Continental Divide in Montana to the Pacific Ocean in Washington, the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail (PNT) traverses spectacular mountain ranges, forests, river valleys, and diverse ecosystems—including the rugged heart of the North Cascades. But a National Scenic Trail is much more than a line on a map, and congressional designation is only the beginning of a long and complex journey.

Join long-distance hiker, conservation advocate, and Pacific Northwest Trail Association Executive Director Jeff Kish for an engaging online exploration of the PNT’s past, present, and future. Jeff has traveled thousands of miles on foot, including thru-hikes of both the Pacific Northwest Trail and Pacific Crest Trail, giving him a firsthand appreciation for the landscapes these trails connect and the challenges involved in protecting them. Since 2016, he has helped lead efforts to develop, steward, and protect one of America’s youngest National Scenic Trails.

Drawing on his experiences both on the trail and behind the scenes, Jeff will explore what it takes to transform a visionary route into a fully realized National Scenic Trail. We’ll learn about the challenges of trail development, land management, conservation partnerships, and community engagement, as well as the progress made so far and the important work still ahead.

Whether you’re a backpacker, day hiker, conservation enthusiast, or simply someone who loves the wild landscapes of the Pacific Northwest, you’ll come away with a deeper understanding of the PNT—and how its continued development offers an extraordinary opportunity to connect people with nature, strengthen local communities, and help shape an enduring conservation legacy.
