North Cascades Night Sky Photography
Event Details
Night Photography at Diablo Lake Overlook introduces participants to the fundamentals of photographing the night sky in one of the most dramatic alpine settings in the North Cascades. As dusk settles over Diablo Lake and the surrounding peaks fade into silhouette, the first stars begin to appear—soon giving way to a sky filled with constellations, and on clear nights, the arc of the Milky Way stretching overhead.

We’ll begin with a short, beginner-friendly session covering essential camera setup, recommended focal lengths, and how to achieve sharp focus in low-light and night conditions. As darkness deepens, you’ll move into hands-on practice under the stars, learning how to compose images that balance sky and landscape while capturing the clarity and depth of the night.

Participants will learn practical techniques for focusing at night, managing exposure, and working in changing light conditions. We’ll also introduce PhotoPills, a powerful planning tool that helps determine critical details such as maximum exposure time based on your specific camera and lens—removing guesswork and helping you avoid common pitfalls in night photography.

Throughout the evening, you’ll have the opportunity to experiment, ask questions, and refine your approach with guidance from your instructor. Whether you’re capturing pinpoint stars, sweeping night skies, or the still, reflective waters of Diablo Lake beneath the constellations, the emphasis is on building confidence through clear, repeatable techniques you can continue to use long after the class.

Designed primarily for beginners—including photographers with general experience who are new to night work—this workshop offers a supportive introduction to a rewarding and often challenging genre of photography, set against the unforgettable backdrop of the North Cascades at night.
