What if the plants growing in your backyard could become your next set of art supplies? From the subtle hues of leaves and flowers to the surprising colors hidden in roots, berries, and other botanical materials, the natural world offers a remarkable palette just waiting to be discovered.

We’ll begin by exploring different ink-making methods and recipes, experimenting with plant materials to discover the colors they contain. Once our inks are ready, the real fun begins! You’ll learn how changes in pH can dramatically shift colors, experiment with mixing and layering, and discover the unexpected range of hues that can emerge from even a handful of natural ingredients.

In the afternoon, we’ll put our handmade inks to work, creating paintings inspired by a still life of natural objects. Robin will introduce techniques for building value, blending colors, painting wet-on-wet, and creating interesting marks and textures. You’ll also experiment with dip pens to add fine details and expressive linework to your artwork.

Robin is a Seattle-based artist, designer, and teaching artist whose work explores the connections between creativity and the natural world. With a background in graphic design, art history, and natural science illustration, she brings a spirit of curiosity and experimentation to her teaching, encouraging students to look more closely at the plants and materials around them.

Whether you’re an experienced artist, a curious naturalist, or simply someone who loves making things with your hands, you’ll leave with new creative skills, your own handmade botanical inks, and a deeper appreciation for the remarkable colors hiding in the natural world.
All skill levels are welcome. No previous painting or ink-making experience is necessary.
