From quiet neighborhood edges to remote mountain ridgelines, cougars move through the landscapes we call home—often unseen, but always present.

Join Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife Carnivore Research Scientist Brian Kertson for an engaging evening exploring the lives of one of the Pacific Northwest’s most elusive predators. Drawing on more than two decades of field research, Brian will share insights into cougar ecology and behavior, how these animals navigate both wild and human-dominated spaces, and what it means to coexist with a top carnivore in our region.

Along the way, you’ll hear stories from the field—moments of close encounters, long hours of tracking, and the challenges and surprises that come with studying Washington’s big cats. Brian will also offer practical guidance for staying safe while recreating outdoors and understanding cougar presence in both rural and suburban environments.
Whether you’re a hiker, wildlife enthusiast, or simply curious about the animals that share our region, this evening offers a deeper look into the hidden lives of cougars—and our relationship to them.
