The Skagit River watershed owes its dramatic landscape to epic geologic events that expanded its reach to its current size. Many of these events are recorded in the sediment layers exposed along the river. Join us as we float the mighty Skagit by river raft to witness the aftermath of ice ages, landslides, and volcanic eruptions that have shaped this beloved valley.
We’ll begin with a geologic overview from retired North Cascades National Park geologist Jon Riedel, then spend a full day on the river with Triad River Tours. While expert guides handle the currents and ensure our safety, Jon will interpret the watershed’s remarkable features at river level—a vantage point he has studied for more than 40 years.
Our journey launches in the town of Marblemount, just upstream from the confluence of the Skagit and Cascade Rivers. Over the course of 17 river miles, we’ll observe evidence of glaciers and lahars, examine several major tributaries, and go ashore at key sites to learn more—plus enjoy a midday picnic lunch.

Keep an eye out for bald eagles, salmon, and other wildlife that thrive along Washington’s second-largest river!
We’ll take out near the town of Concrete, wrapping up a day of geologic wonders and fun on the water.
Triad River Tours will provide rafts, equipment, and the shuttle back to our vehicles at the end of the day. This section of the Skagit River is rated Class I and II, suitable for beginners. The rafts will have a stern mount, and while participants will mainly ride as passengers, some may need to paddle in case of emergency. Please be prepared to sit on a raft for up to eight hours in variable weather conditions without back support. If you have any questions, let us know!
