The Salish Sea is home to two very different kinds of orcas—but can you tell them apart?

Join artist and educator Sara Shimazu for a hands-on online workshop exploring the beauty, anatomy, and unique characteristics of our region’s resident and Bigg’s (transient) killer whales. You’ll begin with an introduction to the biology, physiology, and identifying features of these iconic marine mammals before learning how to accurately sketch their distinctive forms in profile.

After a short break, you’ll bring your drawings to life with watercolor as Sara demonstrates techniques, offers personalized guidance, and answers questions throughout the class. Along the way, you’ll gain a deeper appreciation for the whales that call the Salish Sea home—and learn how to recognize the subtle characteristics that distinguish the two ecotypes.

Whether you’re new to drawing and painting or looking to build your artistic skills, this welcoming workshop offers a creative way to connect with one of the Pacific Northwest’s most beloved marine mammals. No previous drawing or painting experience is necessary—just curiosity and a love of the natural world.

If you can't make the specific date or time of a class you want to take, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the program on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time to re-watch too.
