The Skagit River watershed was shaped by powerful forces—ice, fire, water, and time. Glaciers carved its valleys, landslides reshaped its slopes, and volcanic eruptions left their mark across the landscape. Today, that history is written in the sediments along the river, revealed in roadcuts, and etched into the walls of Skagit Gorge. Join us for a two-day journey by foot, car, and raft as we read this landscape together and explore the deep-time forces that shaped this beloved river valley.

We’ll begin at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center with a geologic overview from retired North Cascades National Park geologist Jon Riedel. After lunch, we’ll descend from the mountains, stopping along the way as Jon points out features that bring the region’s geologic story into focus. In Marblemount, we’ll pause for the evening, giving participants time to rest before taking our learning onto the river the next day. Group camping is available at Howard Miller Steelhead Park, or participants may arrange alternate accommodations, including Base Camp at the ELC.

On day two, we step fully into the story. We’ll launch onto the Skagit River for a full-day float with Triad River Tours. As experienced guides navigate the currents, Jon will interpret the landscape as it unfolds around us. Over 17 river miles, we’ll pass glacial deposits and ancient lahars, trace the meeting of major tributaries, and pull ashore at key sites and for a riverside lunch. Keep an eye out for bald eagles, salmon, and other wildlife that move through this dynamic system. We’ll take out near Concrete after a day immersed in geologic time.

Triad River Tours will provide rafts, equipment, and shuttle service back to your vehicles. This stretch of the Skagit River is rated Class I–II and is suitable for beginners. Participants will primarily ride as passengers, though some may be invited to paddle. Please be prepared to sit on a raft in variable weather, without back support, for up to eight hours.
