Tracking Elusive Snowy Scavengers: Wolverines of the North Cascades - Online

The Cascades Wolverine Project is a grassroots conservation effort dedicated to supporting wolverine recovery in the North Cascades—one of the southernmost and most climate-vulnerable regions of wolverine habitat in North America.

Wolverines are powerful, wide-ranging mountain carnivores, yet they remain one of the most elusive mammals in the Pacific Northwest. The Cascades Wolverine Project monitors these rare animals through winter field surveys and a year-round community science program that relies on observations of wolverines and their tracks from alpine recreationists.

Join project coordinator Cal Waichler for an engaging presentation exploring the lives of North Cascades wolverines. You’ll learn about wolverine biology and behavior, current research and monitoring methods, and what scientists are discovering about the species’ resilience—and vulnerability—in a rapidly changing climate. Cal will also share how community science plays a critical role in wolverine conservation and how everyday backcountry users can contribute valuable data to support recovery efforts.

By the end of the program, participants will better understand why wolverines matter, what threatens their future, and how individuals can meaningfully support conservation through observation, reporting, and stewardship.
