What can we discover about a tree when its leaves are gone? In winter, bare branches reveal the architecture of a tree—its shape, structure, texture, and character—in ways that can be easy to overlook during the rest of the year.

Using photographs and guided demonstrations, you’ll learn techniques for capturing the branching forms, textures, shadows, and subtle variations that give each tree its distinctive presence. Kristin will introduce fundamental drawing concepts including value, scale, proportion, and composition, while showing how light and shadow can create depth, dimension, and atmosphere.

Rather than striving for a perfectly realistic rendering, this class emphasizes careful observation and learning to translate what you notice in the natural world onto the page. You’ll explore how graphite can capture both the intricate structure of a tree and some of the mystery and character that make winter trees such compelling subjects.

Whether you’re an experienced artist or simply someone who finds yourself admiring bare branches against a winter sky, you’ll leave with practical drawing techniques, a completed—or well-underway—tree drawing, and a deeper appreciation for the beauty and complexity of trees in winter.

If you can't make the specific date or time of a class you want to take, you can still register and we will send you a link to view the program on your own time! All registrants will have access to the class recording for a limited time to re-watch too.
All skill levels are welcome. No previous drawing experience is required.
