Welcome to North Cascades Institute
Founded in 1986, North Cascades Institute is a nonprofit conservation organization helping people of all ages and backgrounds experience and enjoy the mountains, rivers, forests and human communities of the North Cascades—so all will care for and protect this special place.
School & Youth Programs
We believe that hands-on learning about the environment begins in childhood—which is why it’s one of our priorities to serve young people. We foster equitable access to outdoor spaces with opportunities for young people to discover, reflect, learn, grow and thrive.
Adult & Family Programs
You're invited for an afternoon, overnight, or weekend stay in one of dozens of programs designed to get you out in nature, exploring and connecting with the wild wonders of our region. From the North Cascades to the Skagit and Methow Valleys, the Salish Sea and even online wherever you are, we offer exciting ways for you to learn about the natural and cultural resources of the area, in small groups led by professional instructors and naturalists.
Most Institute programs take place at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center, a hub of discovery and adventure on Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park—a 1.5 hour drive from Burlington, Washington on scenic State Route 20.
Field Excursions & Online Classes
We offer dozens of learning opportunities, including in-person day and weekend classes, as well as online classes, on a range of engaging topics—birding, photography, geology, wildlife tracking, journaling, mushrooms and more!
Base Camp Learning & Lodging
Base Camp stays offer you the opportunity to explore and learn about the natural and cultural history of the North Cascades while enjoying the comforts of our campus! Each night includes lodging, three meals, and guided learning explorations.
You can contact our friendly registration team with any questions. Scholarships, student, military and disability discounts may be available; give us a call!
