The 2023 Sourdough Fire hit close to home for the North Cascades Institute. After igniting on a ridgeline above Diablo Lake in late July and prompting a rapid response from local land managers, the fire eventually triggered the closure of the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center for the remainder of the season. Like other western fires in the past decade, this event brings into question how we continue to live, work, and recreate with the realities of natural disasters and a changing climate.

Join Fire Ecologist Karen Kopper for an in-depth look at fire in the North Cascades.  We’ll travel up and over the crest from west to east to learn the varied fire regimes of this dynamic landscape, compare and contrast the 2015 Goodell Creek Fire with the 2023 Sourdough Fire, and gain insight into the initial fire effects and long term effects of this mixed severity burn.  Karen will also speak to the role of our changing climate and the ways that land managers plan for wildfire now and into the future.

With 25 years of experience studying and managing fire in the North Cascades, Karen brings a wealth of scientific knowledge and on-the-ground experience.
