Join the North Cascades Institute in partnership with Seattle City Light for an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the Skagit River Hydroelectric Project, including insider visits to the interiors of all three Skagit powerhouses (Gorge, Diablo, and Ross).

Since 1924, the Skagit Project has been providing electrical power for the City of Seattle and surrounding communities. Now you can join City Light for an in-depth tour to learn about the project’s long, rich history as well as the feats of engineering that make it all come together. The three powerhouses are usually closed to the public, so this is truly a special opportunity!

This program starts in the company town of Newhalem, including a tour of the Gorge Powerhouse, the Skagit Project’s first powerhouse. Then we’ll carpool to the town of Diablo to visit the “showcase” Diablo Powerhouse (1936) as well as enjoy a picnic lunch at the Ross Lodge (participants provide their own lunch). Then we’ll board the Alice Ross IV for a cruise across Diablo Lake to access Ross Powerhouse (1952) and complete the day.

The tour will be led by City Light staff Michael Aronowitz, Sr. Resource Planner, and Robert Gordon, Sr. Mechanical Engineer. They bring a wealth of passion and knowledge about the Skagit Project, so bring your curiosity and questions!
