Snow Science Curriculum

We provide snowshoes, in-class orientation & on-snow field session, trained instructors and use of Mt. Baker Ski Area lodges and access to terrain.

Schools provide transportation, teachers and chaperones.

Students provide lunch, outdoor winter clothing and a willingness to learn!

A SnowSchool instructor will visit your classroom at your school and provide an introduction to snow science and help prepare your students for their field session. Classroom visits are approximately 45 minutes & are scheduled the Monday, Tuesday and/or Wednesday before your field session

Students visit the Mt. Baker Ski Area and work together in small teams to carry out a field investigation surrounding the current snow and weather conditions.

During the programs, students will

  • Observe current snow and weather conditions during a snowshoe hike
  • Conduct experiments related to snow and weather conditions
  • Gather and analyze data
  • Communicate their findings
  • Work together in small groups to develop a hypothesis about current avalanche conditions
