Mountain School

A residential environmental education program offered in partnership with North Cascades National Park

Mountain School is a nationally recognized environmental education program offered by North Cascades Institute in cooperation with North Cascades National Park. Mountain School students come to the North Cascades with their school class, teacher and chaperones to learn about the ecosystems and natural and cultural history of the mountains. Mountain School gives young people an experience they will remember forever.

The 3-day 2-night program is based at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center located in North Cascades National Park. The fall season operates from September through November. The spring season operates from March through June. While at Mountain School students spend a majority of their time outside, hiking on trails and exploring the watersheds, forests, plants and wildlife of the North Cascades ecosystems first-hand through interdisciplinary activities in science, math, art, social studies and conservation.

North Cascades Institute education staff design lessons, provide leadership and train program instructors. Mountain School instructors include North Cascades Institute staff, graduate students enrolled in the Master in Environmental Education program through Western Washington University and National Park rangers.

Mountain School makes the magic of the wilderness real for kids

big_quotation_mark.png

The concept behind Mountain School, run by nonprofit North Cascades Institute, sounds simple: In a three-day mountain camp experience, imbue in school children a visceral connection with this special place — the thumping, mountainous heart of Northwest wilderness. Make its magic real to them at a micro level, in the hope that some of them will feel the pull to return as powerfully as a salmon headed home to spawn. Slip into their consciousness rudimentary skills of a naturalist — the ability to observe and make the same personal connections to other wild lands.

This is how it’s done at Mountain School. Has been, in fact, for 25 years as a program that sprouted in leaky Army surplus tents at Newhalem Campground matures into a national model for wilderness education on public lands."
