Mount Baker and the surrounding area are a photographer's dream for capturing inspiring nature images. Well-composed photographs can reflect the epic sense of space and grandeur of our Wild Backyard. North Cascades Institute is excited to collaborate with Alan Majchrowitz, a well-known regional landscape and nature photographer, for a hybrid workshop that will take place both in-person and online

Alan and Institute staff will lead you along easy hikes around the Baker Lake area - beginning at the Baker River trailhead - with time to stop for photo opportunities as the vistas change. He'll teach us how to mindfully see, relate to and interact with the environment before channeling our experiences into images on our cameras

Moving into technical skills, Alan will show us how to appreciate and work in different weather and lighting conditions. His instruction will cover various composition techniques for open landscapes, forests, streams and waterfalls, as well as the magic of macro. Camera techniques like usage of filters, focus stacking, exposure stacking, and manual settings will also be addressed.

Now that you have a bunch of great images on your camera, what next? This in-person field workshop will be followed up on Wednesday, June 13, with an online workshop that will include Alan's instruction on photo editing. It will cover artistic aspects such as creatively interpreting and processing raw files into compelling final images. You'll learn how to utilize basic techniques and different styles of processing to best translate your own vision of a subject. Alan will show you how to think outside the box and develop a 'work in progress' approach. On the technical side, Alan will cover focus stacking and exposure blending.

Participants provide their own digital cameras and have access to photo editing software on their computers. If you can't make the online portion of the class, we will share out the video for you to watch it on your own time.
