Join a fun group of people interested in learning about the natural and cultural histories of the North Cascades on a week-long place-based expedition! We will begin at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center (ELC) where we will prepare for our week of camping, hiking and paddling, and embark on a journey exploring the Skagit River watershed.

Our activities will engage sense of place, explore the complexity of place and identity, deepen understanding of how geography and history have informed communities and culture, and develop approaches for learning from the land. We will alternate between day hikes, paddling canoes and traveling with the support of vehicles to transport our equipment and field camp. Camping areas will include sites in North Cascades National Park, Rasar and Deception State Parks and Washington Park in Anacortes.

We will weave together inspiring reading, activities with community members, group dialogue, and journal practices.

No previous camping, canoeing, or hiking experience required. This course is especially well suited for both environmental and classroom-based educators. Some meals and group camping gear will be provided. Most meals are the responsibility of each participant. Details will be shared in advance of the course in your class letter.
