Spend a day with botanist Shelley Weisberg hiking and botanizing on the flanks of the premier gateway peaks to the Upper Skagit Valley: Sauk Mountain! On a good day, views sweep from the heart of the North Cascades range and Glacier Peak to the Olympics, Salish Sea and San Juan Islands.

We have timed this hike to take advantage of the typical peak of wildflower bloom, and Shelley will orient us to the lupines, penstemons, fireweeds, paintbrushes, cow parsnip, valerian, pearly everlasting lilies and other sub-alpine wonders that line the trail. We'll keep an eye out too for the perfect picnic spot — don't forget to pack a brown-bag lunch!

During our wildflower wander, our small group will explore the connections between the sub-alpine plants, pollinators, seasons and how climate change is having a profound effects on this ecosystem.
