New for 2020! This summer, North Cascades Institute’s popular natural history collaboration with Deep Green Wilderness stretches to a two-night three-day expedition on the Salish Sea! This will give us more time to ride the winds aboard the Orion, a classic 1934 wooden sailboat, and visit some of the lesser-known biological wonders of the San Juan Islands.

While the focus will be on seabirds, marine mammals, and islands wildflowers, participants will also have the chance to practice the art of sailing and navigation.

We'll camp on lovely  Jones and Stewart Islands, where we’ll enjoy fireside chats, share stories and even some singing, not to mention the singular delight of a lingering San Juan sunset!

We’ll also sail for Yellow Island — a natural jewel of the San Juan archipelago. This tiny island, owned and stewarded by the Nature Conservancy and accessed only by special permission, has one of the most brilliant and diverse native wildflower displays in all of the Salish Sea.

All meals are provided. Bring your own tent and camping equipment, or let us know if we can loan you gear.
