Why do trillium flowers change color over the course of spring? What do mushrooms have to do with healthy trees? Why are salmonberries among the first ripe berries each year? Can I eat this? Is this even a plant??
As spring unfolds and deciduous plants leaf out, join naturalist and educator Chris Byrd for a hands-on field course exploring Pacific Northwest native plants. Our group will meet at Larrabee State Park to explore its trails and become familiar with both common and unusual floral neighbors. Bring your curiosity and engage all your senses as we visit diverse habitats in this exceptional park on the shores of the Salish Sea.
In this course, we’ll cover plant identification, ecology, and edibility. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced botanist, you’ll leave with practical skills and a deeper awareness of the vibrant life surrounding us in the Pacific Northwest.
Chris Byrd has been studying natural history along the West Coast for nearly two decades and is currently a PhD candidate in Environmental Studies and Conservation Biology at Antioch University New England. With a broad interest in natural heritage, he has a special focus on mammals, birds, weather, and aquatic systems. Chris holds a Professional Tracker Certification and has taught at several Pacific Northwest institutions, including Alderleaf Wilderness College, Bastyr University, and Western Washington University.
Scholarships and Student, Military and Disability discounts are available for most in-person programs. Call (360) 854-2599 for more info!
