Lichen can be found on every corner of the earth, from the poles to the tropics. They play vital roles in the numerous ecosystems they inhabit. Humans use these fascinating organisms as food, medicine, and dye.

In the class we will learn how to identify a variety of Pacific Northwest lichens. Beginning with immersion into the magnificent world of lichen we'll wander the forest looking at a few varieties. We'll put them under the lens of a microscope so we can also enter their tiny yet compelling world.

We will then learn to dye wool handcrafts with the hidden colors lichens conceal behind their silver-green facade. You can use the imbued wool for knitting, felting, and other applications. If you are interested in dyeing some of your own wool or woolen clothes to take home, please feel free to bring them to the class.

This class is hosted at the exceptional Deception Pass State Park.
