Do you think that a place can have a purpose? What does it look like when a place embodies an intention? Nestled into the Douglas firs and big leaf maples on the shores of Diablo Lake lies a place that has inspired us for over 90 years. Originally serving as a construction camp for workers building Ross Dam and Ross Powerhouse, later developed as a fishing resort, and now home to the North Cascades Institute, the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center hosts thousands of visitors of all ages every year to learn about, connect with, explore and enjoy the natural world.

Join us at the North Cascades Environmental Learning Center for a special weekend exploring the creation of our beloved wilderness campus on Diablo Lake in the heart of the North Cascades. This program features a special dinner prepared by Chef Charles Claassen and his talented kitchen team, overnight lodging, breakfast and lunch the next day, and an interactive panel discussion and presentation with three individuals intimately connected to the design and construction of the Learning Center's building and outdoor amenities:

Institute co-founder and Executive Director Emeritus, Saul Weisberg, Environmental Learning Center architect, David Hall; and longtime National Park Service employee and Institute board member, Gerry Cook.

Saul, David and Gerry will share their respective histories in relation to the creation of the Learning Center, including their insights on design, environmental stewardship, history of the site, green building principles, outdoor learning and their personal experiences at this very special place over the past two decades.

As a bonus, Saul, David and Gerry will lead tours of the campus and grounds on Sunday and share the stories behind the buildings, trails, outdoor shelters and how they all come together to support the mission and programs of North Cascades Institute: to inspire environmental stewardship through transformative learning experiences in nature.
