Event Details
Hank Lentfer in Conversation with Kathleen Dean Moore, Raven's Witness
Join Author Hank Lentfer, author of Raven’s Witness: The Alaska Life of Richard K. Nelson and author Kathleen Dean Moore for a dialogue and multimedia virtual presentation in celebration of a new biography about the life of the late Richard K. Nelson.
Raven's Witness is the inspirational true story of a remarkable life set amidst Alaska’s vast wilderness and vibrant Native cultures. It's also a testament to the transformational power of deep listening. Before his death in 2019, cultural anthropologist, author, and radio producer Richard K. Nelson’s life’s work focused primarily on the indigenous cultures of Alaska and more generally on the relationships between people and nature. He spoke both Inupiaq and Koyukon and lived for extended periods in Athabaskan and Alaskan Eskimo villages, experiences which inspired his earliest books including Hunters of the Northern Ice. He also authored the bestselling book The Island Within, Heart and Blood, and numerous other titles, and served as the host and producer of the popular national public radio series Encounters: Experiences in the North. Nels lived a life consistently marked by patience, attentiveness, and fierce determination.

Hank Lentfer, as a life-long Alaskan, is intimately familiar with much of the country Nels wrote about. Their friendship centered on a mutual love of wild country, conservation, and writing. The idea for Raven’s Witness lodged in Lentfer’s mind years ago, as he and Nels spent a late September day on the water in Glacier Bay recording glacier calving. A biologist by training, Lentfer currently works as a sound recordist and part-time land steward for The Nature Conservancy. He is the author of Faith of Cranes: Finding Hope and Family in Alaska, and lives in Gustavus, Alaska.
Kathleen Dean Moore is a philosopher, climate activist, and author of a dozen books about our cultural and moral relation to the lovely, reeling world. Her early award-winning books of essays celebrate the world -- Riverwalking, Holdfast, and Wild Comfort. Her recent work stands in its defense — Moral Ground, Great Tide Rising, and the forthcoming Earth's Wild Music.
