Sarah Swanson & Max Smith
Sarah Swanson and Max Smith met in graduate school when they were studying birds in the same lab, and they have been birding together ever since. They lead field trips for the Audubon Society Portland and head up “The Murre the Merrier,” a popular Birdathon team. During the last two years, they birded throughout Oregon and Washington while writing their book, Must-see Birds of the Pacific Northwest, which was published Summer 2013 by Timber Press and greeted by positive reviews.
Max has studied birds for a variety of government agencies and currently conducts riparian forest research for the US Forest Service. He enjoys identifying gulls in winter and demystifying the differences between Cackling and Canada Geese.
Sarah has taught hundreds of children and adults about birds and ecology while working at Tualatin Hills Nature Park and Audubon Society of Portland. She currently works in fundraising for an environmental non-profit. Sarah has been birding since she was in the fourth grade and loves to hook new birders with great sightings and fascinating facts.
